The 10/10 Challenge

At the request of the members, the 10/10 challenge has its own section now. Every 10 days a new thread will be opened for that particular exercise.

I'm going to see if I can by something to tie my phone to tomorrow.

I am feeling more comfortable with the horizontals combo but it's really hard just to know for sure.

Austin is still cloudy and cold, but since I'm all bundled up I've noticed the whip bites can't really affect me as easily. I don't hit myself hardly at all now with these cracks, although two days ago I did accidentally nick a finger. But it doesn't take long to crack before I warm up.

In any case, I'll try to find a way to get some video footage for all of you, as soon as I can.

Tristan, being "protected" gives you confidence. When you know that you're not going to hurt yourself you are more relaxed and can focus on the crack and not avoiding hitting your self with the whip. At least that's a theory.
I think you are getting better and with that comes feeling more comfortable with it.
Good job.

I didn't go and practice yesterday, a warm fire, wet shoes and a friendly cat conspired to keep me in.

I did have two sessions on the circus crack today though and I think I have made a bit of a breakthrough. The First session was frustrating, whip tangling not cracking well and just pants in general (pants are underwear here and I'm not gonna tell you what fanny means to a Brit)

I went to the target post and tried the new adjustments and my old technique. The new wasn't reaching the target but the old one was. I then realised that in trying to add in the follow through I was making a hammer like action instead of a fly casting one. I went back and tried again at the practice and this was the result. Still needs work but a lot better I feel.

Still need to loosen up, get it consistent and the follow could be more natural at times

Charlie, that's definitely more relaxed! Much more 'natural'. You could probably relax even more if you let your left arm 'counterbalance' the weight and action of your whip hand. Try holding it a little forward and out to the side (but not stiffly).

Charlie, that looked a lot better towards the end. Nice slow flowing movement.
Yes, you have made a breakthrough. It looks nice and controlled.
Excellent job. You should be a happy camper indeed.

Yup happy camper :) even had some progress on the vertical flick, the low one if you know what I mean. Always struggled with that one. The little black whip isn't playing ball yet but the 8' seems to like it.

Robert, agreed, when I teach poi I get the person to rock their centre and let the arms move well, like a whip. The movement comes from the middle and the arms balance so that makes allot of sense. I suspect it will come fairly naturally once the new movement is in the muscles. I hope so :)

Tristan, I'm glad to hear you've found something that helps you relax. It makes all the difference in the world. I had a bit of practice yesterday before I left for Canada again. I doubt I'll be able to do a whole lot of wide vertical or horizontal cracks in my hotel room.

Bob if you hang your arm out the window? :)

Freaked myself out today, I was watching back the video thinking this really isn't good, only to realise it was from one of my first days :)

A bit so so today some good some bad and a limp wrist apparently :) had a go on my left too, I need to pause more on that side.

I just recently discovered how to make videos private. Happy me! I don't want my youtube videos out there for the wide world to see.

Speaking of videos, I bought the broom handle and some zipties to make my videos, but my battery was too low by the time I was going out to practice. So no videos yet. But I did get some practice in.

So what day are we on now for this combo (Monday Dec. 12)? I count day 7, but my count might be off since I missed the first 2 or days or so.

Same here Tristan, I have upgraded my account on vimeo which gives me more options, I was planning to anyway but this brought it forward.

A nice practice today CC is feeling more solid and left hand is better, no video today but I will post tomorrow which will be day 10 for me on this crack. I'll keep going on it but will start to work on the horizontal.

Tristan, you're right it's day 7 and good going on getting a system to be able to hold your camera for future videos.

Charlie, that's excellent. Feeling comfortable is a sign of really good progress being made.

The weather is improving for today so I might actually get some actual practice in.

I wasn't able to get any practice in today, and I'm not sure I'll be able to either before a meeting I have tomorrow. I'll try, but I have to get over to my apartment right after work chew some people out for not doing some bug exterminations weeks after being reported. Diplomacy has not been effective.

So today's practice felt good, reviewing the footage I still have some work to do but I'm happy with how its progressing.
Couldn't resist trying a few underhand flicks too, I have always found this tricky but I have started getting some nice little pops and poofs.

Left side looking better too but still need to leave longer at the back.

I had ear plugs in today and realised I had been using the sound of the popper behind me a bit too much, it's a useful reference but I need to rely on the feeling of the whip more. It was harder getting feedback with them in on the cracks too but my ears will thank me.

Might not start the next crack straight away, I might be travelling tomorrow and I want to let everything rest for a day too.
