The "our whip" made me think of that bit, for some reason ;)

Maybe one of us should've taken the left turn at Albuquerque :P

Well, as promised more pictures! It is an Australian stockwhip with a 16 plait 22" handle and 7ft 12 plait thong. The handle core is a fiberglass rod. I overlay the rod with triangle pieces of newspaper and bind it with sinew. The handle has a pineapple knot on the butt and a grapevine hitch on the keeper end. The thong is 3 strands for the core with a 4 plait tapered belly and a kangaroo bolster. The belly is plaited for about 3 feet. The remaining 4 strands we split into 8 strands and trimmed every 6-8 inches to create taper in the last half of the thong. The overlay is 12 strands dropping to 6 strands for the last foot or so. The fall is redhide ending with a bonded nylon popper. There is a turk's head knot on the keeper end to cover the start of plaiting. The whip was rolled and dressed with Pecards and finally coated with 5 layers of shellac with Pecards applied after 2 coats.

Overall I am happy with how it turned out. I took it for a test crack in the park. It cracked easily. There are a few new things I tried such as the pineapple knot and grapevine hitch. I have never made a two tone stockwhip and had to figure out how to start the keeper and plaiting. I probably should have added a little weight in the handle end.

As I thought all along, that is a gorgeous whip! I'm heart broken that it didn't make it's way to Texas. Am I jealous of Tyler? I certainly am! (grin). Now, I know, at some point I will be the lucky recipient of a whip from ______. But until that time I choose to drool over this one.

I looked at this so many times that I did not realize I did not post any comments after we saw the final pictures!
That is one very elegant looking whip there Jeff. I like the colors, and even more, I like the long graceful proportions. All the parts seem to fit together perfectly.

Alrighty, it's update time :) I regret that so far I have only done a few minutes of overhead cracking due to the weather/wet ground. I'm not positive I live in the wettest place of everyone here, but I'm sure I'm in the top 3! We have our own rainforest in this state, for crying out loud! :P I likely won't get to crack it much until July, which is usually about the time I get to crack leather. I apologize Jeff, for not doing this sooner, I've been completely swamped. I wouldn't want you to think I don't value this whip, because I love it! Here it is on my Wall of Awesome, along with my other 2 leather whips, my confederate d guard bowie, and of course, my copy of Frankenstein illustrated by Bernie Wrightson :) Only my favorite things go on the Wall:

Image

and here it is by itself:

Image

The hooks were hand forged by a blacksmith at a place in Waco, Texas where they practice all kinds of traditional crafts and trades called Homestead Heritage. My wife suggested I get the hooks to hang my two whips on, and at the time I said, "but there's three hooks- so I get another leather whip, right?" And now I do!

Image

The fall hitch feels as hard as a rock:) Also, I learned from Robby the importance of the plaiting within a few inches of the hitch, this ois solid too.

Image

Image

The keeper looks great, I love the way leather keepers wrinkle, they have tons of character.

Image

The handle has a long, elegant and perfect taper. I love tapered handles, this one feels very good in the hand.

Image

Image

The heel knot, as previously discussed, looks and feels great:)

Image

Lastly, I love the colors. I can't wait to break this whip in this summer. Due to the stock whip feel, it works really well in the reverse overhead, it felt great. We all put our time and materials for the swap, but as the only one of us that did Roohide, you get the Most Generous Whip maker award Jeff:)

Wall of Awesome! Why didn't I think of that? I must now have a wall of awesome! One of my very own and soon! Wonderful photos there Tyler. I'm still in love with Jeff's work on that whip. I believe I, along with everyone else involved in the swap, was secretly hoping to get that whip. As Tyler says, Jeff providing such a beauty made out of Roo hide is indeed a very generous thing.

Tyler, your Wall of Awesome really lives up to it's name. And Jeff's whip looks like an awesome addition to it too. The colors look really cool in closeups.

And about that, will the colors change when the leather ages and is conditioned every now and then? I understand that leather turns darker on the handle where you hold it, but what about everywhere else?
