This is still a WIP, but here is the Hunt whip I am working on. So far I have stripped the original collar off, and replaced it with a beaded nickel silver collar (nickel silver is a brass like alloy with nickel added). I also bridged the gap between the collar and cane with a 28 strand gaucho plait in kangaroo, and filled the antler and collar with epoxy for the binder. The cane and leather will receive a couple coats of shellac for good measure. The cane will also be cut down to 20" and receive a plaited Dacron, keyhole keeper.
Cool project Devin.
Do you have to cut the cane down because of the condition it is in, or do you just prefer it the shorter length?
It's looking good with the new collar and leather.
I like the roo plait. It looks great on the cane. Great way to deal with the taper without having a tapered collar.
What was the original collar? It almost looks like it was tape. I don't see any marks from an original silver collar.
I agree with shortening the shaft if it is going to be a whip and not a crop.
Thanks guys!
Carl, the original collar was metal, but I'm not entirely sure of its composition. If it was ever silver, then it was plated as there is no hallmark. Also, the collar was incredible thin, and the gap beneath was bridged with plaster and whatever that white adhesive is. There is what looks like copper with corrosion on it, however i think there is a base metal underneath, as where there are flex lines, the metal is silverish in color.
I think the epoxy connection will long outlast the original adhesive.
Devin:I have not taken one appart that the glue was white I guess it was what ever was in use at the time. Probably silver plate that is almost all gone.
You have given it new life.
Jonathan: I would think at that length it was a ladies crop or a sidesaddle cane.
Given the sorta pliable nature of what was left, I almost wonder if it is a rubber based glue, which would fit if it is particularly old.
On the new life, I think it looks better now than it did when it was new.
Thanks Tyler, I'm not sure, if it was silver plated then the base metal should have been copper. You could tin plate it, but it wouldn't have the same look at all.
Very well could be Carl.
I was hesitant to cut the cane as it was just about perfect condition. I had planned to put a braided dacron keeper on it, but I'm thinking I'll opt for a braided kangaroo one since the black just doesn't look right. Probably would've just converted it to a walking cane had the cane been significantly longer, the stuff is beautiful to look at.
