Birthday whip- The Unleaded Cow Whip

Post by Roy Partin »

For my daughters 6 year old birthday today, she wanted her first whip. It had to be purple, her favorite and my most hated color. The handle is a piece of 12 inch blood wood.

She is a very small girl even for her age , so I had to keep the weight at a minimum. I left out the BB core and chose to do a plaited core. It begins with a short section of 4 plait going into a long tapering twist. This gave me an excellent taper and flow . The whip cracks effortlessly. I think it will be perfect for her to learn on. No Bb core so I'm calling this my Unleaded line of whips. I have a 16 plait Unleaded in the making and will report on it when finished.

There you go making yet another whip that will be suitable for use with those lightening fast cows! Looks great Roy.

Roy,

I am not a big fan of purple myself but I would not be ashamed to use this whip. The plaiting is very tight, the taper is perfect for the length and the taper of that handle is something I have seldom seen on a cow whip but it would be my preference over the thicker lathed handles of others.

Well done,
-Dusty

What Robby said.

Very nice and girly, but still something I wouldn't mind having myself either. Now that's a birthday present there.

Thanks everyone for the fine compliments. I am looking forward to spending time with her in the back yard, teaching her to crack the way my father taught me. It's times like those that I will always cherish.

Awesomely done Roy... being a Dad in the proper fashion. Nice job on the whip too! My 3rd whip I plaited, posted here was 'Green Peace'. That whip was for my daughter. Now granted, she's 20. But she was super excited to receive it. I hope this is your daughter's favorite gift of the year sir.

Jonathan - Thanks buddy. Now I'm picturing race cows!

Not my fault Big-T :)
Lightning Fast Cows(TM) are all Roy's idea from one of his previous customer challenges.

Don't ask why, but I just had to put "cow racing" on Google image search. Couldn't help myself. Dude, I guarantee it was worth it, go check it out :)

Excellent looking cow whip Roy, not much to say that hasn't been said, other than is that really Bloodwood? I have a whip handled with a piece of it, and it is deep red, hard, and heavy, or perhaps just the picture? I am a fan of the purple though, nicely done.

Beautiful whip Roy. Years from now you daughter will look at that whip and not think of the colors she loves but of the father who made if for her. Handmade specifically for her birthday will last her far longer than the whip will.

Thanks guys, and yes Devin it's blood wood . I needed the whip light but that small handle gave it the perfect weight and balance. She has carried the whip around all morning and we had a short lesson before noon. After that she says she doesn't need my help any more. Here is the money shot of little miss independence in her princess dress.
