The "Making of" Gallery - Roy Partin

This new Gallery replaces the former "Masters Gallery", which will work from now on as pure archive. Here you will find not only the work and art from folks who sell whips, but also from folks, who create their whips out of pure passion. And we have an additional gallery. It is called "The Gallery - Making of".

The "Making of" Gallery - Roy Partin

Post by Robby Amper »

In this thread, Roy will post his making of pictures. The finished whip will be presented in the Makers and Masters Gallery. If you have questions on materials, braiding, patterns and what ever... Post it here!. If you like to comment on a finished whip... Post it here. The Galleries will be only what they're called - Galleries.

When you are exited on something - post it here. If you like to say how much you like something - or not - post it here. All comments which are made in the respective Masters Gallery will be simply deleted. The galleries will be like an exhibition. The whip, the art, the name of the whip. Not more. If you want to say something... You know where to post, right?

Thank you for your cooperation!

Matching 6 feet 12 plait cow whips.

I stretch the core between 2 door knobs and close loop bind it with the serving tool. I find this gives me a stiff and dense core.Image
An 8 plait belly with a down and back open loop bind.

finishing off with the 12 plait overlay

These are wonderfully vivid, Roy! Were they made for an Irishman? :)

Mr. Robert, I agree they are quite shiny. I think the man wanted them highly visible in case they were dropped.

I'll repost it here,

What is your method for matched whips? Do you do a belly at a time like Nick? Or do you go a step/drop at a time?
Sorry Ron/Jessie!

Roy, do the spools of artificial sinew fit on the serving tool or do you have to respool it?

Mark, I made a contraption that helps me fill up the serving tool spool from the roll of artificial sinew with the use of a drill.

I love how the picture of the dogs makes them look like they're intently watching the whip's progress. They turned out great, Roy.
I'll give it a try, Dad, but it's going to be really hard...kind of like trying to saw something in half using a banana.

Great job Roy!
I have to try serwing tool as well. Doing closed loop by hand really wears your hands down.

Scott was faster than me in saying that :) It really cracked me up to see the doggies (especially when the green paracord comes up) looking with those critical looks on your work.

Listen up, everybody - that is the difference between whip makers and those incompetent idiots and bumblers, which just call themselves "Whip Maker". I think about "Snappin' Sam" who was stupid enough to post publicly that he uses E-Tape as core foundation and others. Or the whip I made the video on. Or what Rachel had in her hands, the whip, made by Bobbi Holyoak.

What you do there - it's all under the surface. But you deliver quality even where nobody can see it!

That is the true art of whip making. That is what it means to take pride in one's work.

Robby, thank you, I can only say I have had the opportunity to learn from the best, and Roy is definitely that. His work is an expression of his character: quality. He sure sets the bar high for us all! Excellent, excellent work. But you already know this, too ;)

Thank you my friends very much. I have come to realize through the years that producing a decent whip utilizes a lot of time and pain. There is no way to do it fast, skip steps, or skimp on material. Even using the serving tool is painful, but it produces the tightest bind.

Roy, that is it exactly. A lot of time and pain in varying degrees.... And high quality materials. And must be a part of the person making it included, because it shows in the movement and appearance. Your work keeps getting finer and finer.
