Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

Just make sure you have thick enough steel=mass to absorb the heat

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

16-18 gauge should do it.

I am working on my first matched set.

24' TT cores, bound.

They will be 6' 16plait woody bulls.

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

That looks like a promising start Ethan. But ' means foot right?

Then your cores are 24" instead of 24'? Or is my interpretation wrong?

Sven

You've chosen wisely...

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

Yes Sven, ' means foot. I just forgot to hit shift so it would be ". smile So they are 24 inch cores.

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

Ok, since we use the metric system in the Netherlands, I'm not familiar with all the symbols for the imperial system. So there was a possibility it could have ment something else.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Sven

You've chosen wisely...

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

Actually, I may start using metrics over the imperial system for measuring. It is just so much simpler.

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

Ethan, that looks like a very good start for your matched set!

I'm sorry to hear about the heat issue on your previous project. One way to eliminate that problem would be the use of a "waterbath": if you take a container filled with water and palce your waxing pot above that container it will evenly get heated by the steam of the water container without gettin to hot at certain spots.

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

Thanks Ben! The water bath is what I used when I first started experimenting with waxing bracelets and other small stuff. But, now the problem is I can't find anything bigger than the pan I've been using for waxing whips.

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

I am working on a performance hybrid whip. The hardware store doesn't sell any smaller sizes below 1/2". So I scaled up, with 20 plait grip on the handle and 16 plait thong in the works.
Once I complete the thong the handle grip will be waxed as well, along with the Honduras red-heart knob to to give it a nice finish.

Sizes of what, please?

That should look very good, Ethan!

Re: Whips by Ethan Mitchell

I realy like the pattern on the handle (beautiful ringwork)!
This would also be a great pattern when doing a square start from the middle of the handle since it would look evely from all sides (without that typical v shaped square pattern on the front and the back)!

Thanks Ben! Took me about 4 hours to do that. tongue

First bellies on the matched set. Binding is next.

Very nice, what size are you making them?

And I agree with Ben, I love the ring work.
