  My second snake whip.

Post by Jyri Haveri »

So as i got an order for a snake whip and i sended some pics to customer i tought i could share them here as well. This is my second snake so i dont have lots of expierence with them.

Client wanted the core to be almost full of bb:s but i have been trying to get out of using them so i suggested him that i would do it with nylon core and 3 bellyes.
I putted thinner paracords inside one 550 and slided that to another 550 so they end create taper.

Like so.

Core binded:

Second belly..

All bellyes got same tratment, closed loop binding.

Third belly plaited:

I plaited every belly from the tip. When i bind them i remove the thread wich i used to attach the strands and rearrage the strands to make it nice and smooth. Binding goes little bit past the belly every time.

I completed the overlay and tested it.

Client is going to wax it but it works fine already, i think.

One thing i founded out is that when you are plaiting from the tip, dont cut your strands off at the handle. You can plait next layer over the exsess strands so you get everything nice and tight at the very end of the handle.

I post more when i get it ready.

Jyri, that binding looks exceptionally well-done. Nice job!
I'll give it a try, Dad, but it's going to be really hard...kind of like trying to saw something in half using a banana.

Interesting binding preference there Jyri. That's a lot of closed loop binding for a second belly. I tend to progressively open up the binding the further down the belly I go. Still, from the video it certainly cracks nicely. Good job.

I tought that being this small with so thick handle end i would make it a stik if i would have used open loop binding to it.
4 layers of closed loop binding should be enought for this short whip.
And if i would not bind the whole belly there would be a spot where there is no binding at all and then there would be the binding that attaches the belly strands wich wouldnt be good.
If this would be longer and heavier whip i would have given it open loop binding progressively over the closed loop.
I just love how closed loop binding smoothes everything down and how strands glide over it when plaiting.

Binding sucks :D

Wow...how do you achieve such a inflexible behaviour? It's incredibile!
I wish I could achieve only 50% of that on my bullwhip and I would be happy... but I can't achieve it :(

Thanks Marco!
Closed loop binding does not give so much stiffness so it stays more fluid but wont be enough by its own to create nesessary stiffness for transitions. Taper is important as well.
