Topic: Build thread for dog shelter campaing

Build threads are fun so... Why not?

This is the whip i'm going to donate this year, if it comes out good enough.

I start with 6mm steel rod wich i have grinded with 60grit belt.

Core is attached with glue and binding. As the core consist from 3 thinner paracords and two 550 paracords i have to glue the inner cords to the steel and bind the most outern cord over the steel.

Like so.

Next i bind the core. As it consist from 5 cords right after the handle it really condenses when bound.

Here is the first belly plaited

Here it is bound. I used closed loop binding all the way past the point where the next belly will end. And when i start to bind i turn the whip back side up.

Second belly plaited. I tryed something different this time. I like 3 bellyed whips but i dont like the thick handle too much. I dont like to start belly from the end of the handle like Nick does so i tought if i could use joke metod.

I plaited well past the point where i wanted to stop plaiting and bound it really tight.
Then i undid the plaiting and arraged the strands and did closed loop binding really tight.

I notised that the handle was oval and and it didnt go away so i undid it and cutted 2 strands off and bound it again.

It does not look much but when i do this same thing on the third belly i think it is going to feel much slimmer

Here it is waiting for binding and next belly.

To be continued..

A very good start.

I managed to make brass conchos today. They are pretty thick so it should give nice balance to the whip.

Nicely done.

Re: Build thread for dog shelter campaing

Jyri, have you done cores like this before? Do I understand right-you loaded 3 of the smaller cords (275?) into a 550 strand and then threaded the 550 into another 550? Looks like it makes a very dense core. Very interested in how this comes out, although after using TT cores on the last 4 or 5 whips and finally starting to get them to turn out like I want them to, I'm pretty sold on the TT cores.
I also really like the idea of thinner handles, but have always worried about starting the belly down towards the transition. I've done it that way a couple of times and the whips seem to be holding up OK, but this seems like a good alternative. Nice work.

Very cool idea for slimming the handle down! I've thought of trying something like that... it will be nice to see how that turns out. Looks kind of like a reeeaaallly thin squid in the last picture with all the strands going every which way at the end of the handle! tongue

Re: Build thread for dog shelter campaing

Thank you!

Mark, the snake whip i made had same core.
In every whip i have made they have had bb and 550inside each other in the core .
275 cord gives you really really much space to play with the taper and most importantly the solidness. If you put three 275 cords inside 550 cord you can still get it inside 550 cord. That makes 4 places you can drop weight, diameter and solidness.

When you have cutted your stands you then habe to sit down and drinf a cup of coffee and think about how you get them inside each other. big_smile

I did it by taking 275 cords and melted their ends together to very small sylinder and i mean small. Then you just milk it in. Then i melt all of them together to very small sylinder and milk it in 550 cord. You have to have shortist 550 cord outside so you dont have to milk it in so long way.  the triciest part is to attach the core to the handle. You have to glue the most inner parts to the handle and then bind the outmost cord over the handle. Then just milk every bit of loosness out. It will feel solid but when you do closed loop binding ofer it you will see a wawe of loose fibers moving ahead.

Ethan i should put eyes on it big_smile

Very nice binding!  Thanks for the share.  I guess I need to start thinking about what I'm going to make.

This is very interesting, Jyri. Thanks for taking the time to share it.

Re: Build thread for dog shelter campaing

Jyri. It is interesting even though I don't know anything about making a whip, but it is fun to win a whip, where you can see how it is made. It might give an idea of, why whips behave different. thanks for shoving

Today is a good day

Excellent work, Jyri!
I'm sure that whoever will win this whip is going to be very pleased!

All the best
